- First Time Home Buyers Tax Credit and Great News for Buyers who are NOT First Time Buyers.
Deadline Extended for the $8,000 Home Buyers Tax Credit. The $8,000 tax credit is available for first time home buyers only. It is defined as a person who has not owned a principal residence in the last 3 years. The credit is now available for home sales that go under contract by April 30th and close by June 30th, 2010. Single tax filers who earn up to $125,000 are eligible for the total credit amount. Those who earn more than this can receive a partial credit. However, single filers who earn $145,000 and above are ineligible. Joint filers who earn up to $225,000 are eligible for the total credit amount. Those who earn more than this cap can receive a partial credit. However, joint filers who earn $245,000 and above are ineligible. The credit amount is 10% of the purchase price not to exceed $8,00o. The tax credit does not need to be repaid. Great News for Buyers who are NOT First Time Buyers The new $6,500 tax credit is available for buyers who have owned and occupied a primary residence for a period of five consecutive years during the last eight years-for the purchase of a primary residence. All contracts need to be in effect no later than April 30th and close no later than June 30th, 2010. Home price limit is $800,000. Single tax filers who earn up to $125,000 are eligible for the Total credit amount. Those who earn more than this cap can Receive a partial credit. However, single filers who earn up $145,000 and above are ineligible. Joint filers who earn up to $225,000 are eligible for the total amount. Those who earn more than this cap can receive a partial credit. However, joint filers who earn $245,000 and Above are ineligible.
