Historical Overview
The history of the Tempe Town Lake area and the Salt River (Rio Salado) crossing goes back centuries, to the farming communities of local native americans. By the late 1800’s a way was needed to cross the river when Charles Hayden started Hayden Ferry at a place known as the Salt River Narrows. This is now the entrance to downtown Tempe.
Tempe was officially named after the Greek Vale of Tempe in mythology in 1879. The Roosevelt Dam, which opened in 1911, was constructed on the upper Salt River to slow the flow of water through the Valley and provided water retention and irrigation control.
